About support brokers

What does a support broker do?

A Support Broker is someone who helps people to plan and organise the support they need to stay in control and to get the most out of their lives.  They will help you identify the  existing services and activities available for your local area,  establish alternative bespoke solutions where possible, and  action your choices on your behalf.  They will also help you write your Support Plan, work out how much it will cost and look for additional funding that you maybe entitled to.

Approved support brokers are used directly by some councils to plan and manage care services for them, and they cover any fees.

Who can they help?

Anyone who would like help with sourcing care and support or social activities either for themselves, a family member or someone they care for. This care may be as simple as a weekly visitor for company or for cleaning, to full-time care in your home or in a residential community.

Some people will be entitled to receive regular money from the council to pay for the care and support; this is called a Direct  Payment.  People who receive Direct Payments do not have to use the services that are provided by the council and can use a support broker to find alternatives and negotiate prices  for them. Those who are not eligible for support from the council may also choose to use a support broker to ensure they (or the person they care for) enjoys the best care from the range of free or paid-for services available. This may be particularly valuable for those who are meeting costs themselves, either in full or as a contribution.
